The benefits of metal detecting

Metal detecting is a fascinating hobby, but one that is much misunderstood. Several years ago I was detecting on a lazy Sunday afternoon at a local college. An older gentleman walked up and inquired if I was finding any moles. Unsure if he was joking, I launched into an infomercial type speech regaling the benefits of metal detecting. After several minutes of explanation, the man left with a wave wishing me luck in getting rid of those pesky varmints. I think most people identify what a hobbyist is doing with a metal detector, but they may not realize the benefits of such an endeavor.

Metal detecting can be a hobby used as a way to get in some exercise. One need only try to walk and swing a three to five pound detector for a few hours to experience the health benefit. Metal detecting involves walking, bending, and carrying a small amount of weight; all of these activities done for an extended period of time. The exciting benefit of this work-out is one may unearth some very interesting items that have been covered by soil for several years. Hours can pass quickly and the impact on the muscles is relatively unknown until the detector is thrown into the car and you're heading home.

Another benefit of metal detecting is this is a great hobby to enjoy with family and friends. My dad and I have owned detectors for almost twenty five years. Some of our most memorable times together are the times that we were out searching for "treasure." There have been times that we have only found a handful of newer change, but on one occasion we were given permission to hunt a piece of property that Union Soldiers camped on about one hundred fifty years ago. I remember my dad's excitement when he found his first civil war bullet. Today, my boys enjoy going out with me and love to help find the item in that next plug of dirt.

Lastly, metal detecting can be a great way to find a piece of history. Several years ago, I was invited to metal detect a big open field which was once the site of the county fair and special community events. From 1890 - 1940, this now open pasture, had been the hub of excitement for kids of all ages. Metal detectorists had hunted this property since the mid-1970's. I didn't know if I would find anything at this site which had been picked over for decades, but the thoughts of the possibilities of what I might find motivated me to swing that machine away. That day I found my first (and only to date) silver half-dollar. Every time I look at that coin I remember the old fairgrounds and a great day with some good friends.

I would recommend metal detecting to anyone. Talk to locals who have a detector. Get a decent machine that will have settings to help you find more than pop tabs and begin to enjoy the benefits of a great hobby.
